Attractions on the Krutynia Kayak Trail
The picturesque adventure along the Krutynia trail stretches for over 100 km, where every participant will find the natural richness of the Masurian Landscape Park and the diversity of the Piska Forest. The route has a perfectly gentle current, which leads through the most beautiful European landscape, as the Krutynia is considered the most beautiful trail in Europe. This wonderful adventure will allow you to meet the white-tailed eagle or the majestic golden eagle on the trip. This area is rich in strictly protected animal species, so everyone can see such rare species of animals as lynx, black stork, capercaillie, and many others protected by the Born to be free Foundation from Kadzidłowo, which operates in these beautiful areas. The bank of the Krutynia River is decorated with pines and solid oaks climbing to the sky. They were once materials for the masts of sailing ships. An indispensable and unusual phenomenon that delights tourists are the freshwater sponges Euspangilla lacustris, called blood stains. The phenomenon is perfectly complemented by Hildenbrandtia rivularis growing on the stones, creating the so-called Blood Stones. This phenomenon, of course, makes the adventure of a kayak trip on the Krutynia River even more interesting. The trip route is full of amazing attractions, and here are some of the most interesting ones… Starting from the town of Sorkwity, where we begin our adventure, it is worth visiting the Evangelical-Augsburg Church built around 1470. Initially, it was a half-timbered building, covered with straw. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the old church was dismantled and the construction of a new one in the Baroque style began. The tower was built in the first half of the 18th century (1701-1712). Since 1754, the appearance of the church has not changed. It is a brick, steel building. The vaults are supported by four pairs of columns. You can see a memorial stone erected in honor of Jan Goerke, the son of a pastor, a doctor born in Sorkwity in 1750, the founder of the health service in the Prussian army. In addition to the late-Renaissance Patronage Lodge or a confessional from 1702, it is worth paying attention to the organ from 1875. In the village, we can also see the neo-Gothic palace of Von Mirbach built in the years 1850-1856. The style of the palace referred to Gothic castles: the picturesquely varied body, turrets, spires, and battlements were to give the impression of romantic fortified seats. An exotic attraction of the park’s tree stand is the Japanese ginkgo tree growing by the palace. Sorkwity itself had strategic importance in the Middle Ages. In the place where the Palace is currently located, there was a Prussian guardhouse. The original name Sarkewite most likely comes from the Prussian language and means “sargas” – watchman and “wieta” – place. Starting the route in Sorkwity, we cover a river-lake section, which has 4 lakes (Lampackie, Lampasz, Kujno, and Dłużec) and 3 rivers (Sobiepanka, Grabówka, and Chmielówka). After setting off, we will quickly find ourselves on Lake Lempackie, where we have a beautiful large lake of 278 ha, which hypnotizes with its calm water and lush forests on the banks. Further on, we enter the charming Lake Lampasz, about 4 km long, through a narrow isthmus. Along the right wooded bank, we can get to know the village of Jędrychowo. From this lake, we enter an interesting shallow river called Sobiepanka. The bottom of the river is stony and clear, so we can experience very interesting views and enjoy pure nature. Sobiepanka turns into Lake Kujno, where at the end of the lake we have the outflow of Grabówka. In the further sections, it is possible to camp on the Island of Love, where in the middle of the lake we can experience a sandy and wooded island. Here, the views change, as the banks are overgrown with water reeds, which give a specific character to the entire section. On this section, we come across the nature reserve called Królewska Sosna. It is part of the Masurian Landscape Park and serves to protect the tree stand of the Piska Forest. It is worth paying attention to being in the Zakręt reserve, which is famous for its dystrophic lakes and floating islands. These lakes fill several-meter depressions with impermeable soil and are supplied only with rainwater; they are surrounded by moraine hills. Most importantly, in the reserve we can come across the extraordinary and famous carnivorous round-leaved sundew. With a bit of luck, you can also see a wild-hunting eagle-owl. We can feel the closeness of nature by experiencing gray herons flying overhead. There are many attractions, but we are just approaching one of the most charming sections of the kayak trip on the Krutynia. The stage leading to Ukta is considered the most beautiful section on the entire Krutynia River trail. It is the most famous stage of the kayak trip in the entire world. It is the most frequent destination for crowds of foreign tourists, so it is worth paying special attention to this section. This beautiful stage of the trip begins with the charming Krutyńskie Lake, where the beautiful landscape turns into a gentle river that does not change its character. The riverbed is quite wide with numerous sandy islets. In Krutyński Piec at the backwater of the mill dam, the river slows down its flow to awaken with its current on the next section and show more character. At times, the river gains a faster current, which adds spice and a pinch of excitement. After the exciting section, the current slows down, and the banks become low, meadow-like, overgrown with reeds and water vegetation. After passing the bars and campsites, the Filipons Monastery becomes an unusual attraction, which is rich in, among other things, 19th-century icons, crosses, and a majestic silver chandelier. A short section of the river will lead us to the town of Ukta, where a wealth of tourist attractions awaits us. Directly in Ukta, we can use many bars, accommodation centers, or restaurants. We can also go on a local tour of beautiful hiking and cycling trails. The biggest local attraction is the Wild Animal Park in Kadzidłowo. In the center, you can watch, and even pet and feed many species of animals. A walk among deer is an amazing and unforgettable experience. In the Wild Animal Park, we can see wolves, beavers, moose, eagle-owls, and many other animals. In the Park, we can also get to know the world-famous method of reintroducing endangered species by Mr. Andrzej Krzewiński. Thanks to the Born to be free Foundation, there is a unique opportunity to see extinct species such as lynx, capercaillie, black grouse, or black storks. While on the tourist trail, it is also worth visiting the Forest Lodge in Pranie, which houses the Museum of Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński. Directly in Ukta, we have the opportunity to visit the neo-Gothic church from 1845 with a neo-Gothic main altar with a painting of the Lamentation of Christ from the second half of the 16th century, attributed to Girolamo Muziano. The area is famous for many attractions, so it is worth taking a moment to delve into the secrets of this wonderful place. Continuing the trip, we are heading to the town of Nowy Most. This stage of the route takes on a completely new character, serving up new experiences for kayakers. The route runs in the shade of trees and the surrounding swamps. Leaving Ukta, we enter the Lower Krutynia, where we can enjoy the landscape of the M. Wańkowicz Reserve. In this place, the Krutynia is surrounded by trees creating a tunnel, where everyone is provided with pleasant shade. The water current carrying us turns the landscape into a wide river mouth, where we are surrounded by reeds. The pleasant wide section leads us for about 7 km to Nowy Most, where you can stretch your legs. After setting off on the shallow river from Nowy Most, we enter a different landscape, which is the wide Lake Bełdany. The lake is on the Masurian sailing trail, so as you can easily guess, we will be accompanied by many sailing boats, motorboats, and ships. Near the town of Kamień, we will find an island, many holiday resorts, and several yacht ports. We are slowly ending our adventure with the trip, reaching the last stage of the route, which is the 12 km section Kamień – Ruciane Nida. As you can see, carried by a wonderful adventure and beautiful landscapes, we have the opportunity to rest, regain strength, and get to know the most wonderful kayak trail in Europe.
Kayaking Trips
Krutynia River Kayak Trail – Route Stages
We start the kayaking trip on the Krutynia River in Sorkwity, where we cover a river-lake section that includes 4 lakes (Lampackie, Lampasz, Kujno, and Dłużec). These are beautiful, clean, and picturesque lakes. Everyone will not only experience a beautiful landscape here but also gain valuable health by being in such a clean climate. The trip route also includes 3 rivers (Sobiepanka, Grabówka, and Chmielówka), whose varied currents will add character to the whole adventure. Sobiepanka deserves special attention here, as it is full of numerous shallows, obstacles, and turns. Its lively current will bring even bigger smiles to your faces. After setting off, we will quickly find ourselves on Lake Lempackie, a beautiful, large lake of 278 ha, which hypnotizes with its calm water and lush shoreline forests. Further on, we enter the charming Lake Lampasz, which is about 4 km long, through a narrow passage. Along the right wooded bank, we can see the village of Jędrychowo. From this lake, we enter an interesting shallow river called Sobiepanka. The bottom of the river is stony and clear, so we can see very interesting views and enjoy pure nature. Sobiepanka flows into Lake Kujno, where at the end of the lake we have the outflow of Grabówka, as well as Lake Dłużec and Białe. At this stage, after passing a few islands, we arrive at the station in Bieńki on the right bank.
This stage consists of two long lake troughs and typical river sections. After leaving Bieńki, we stick to the right bank of Lake Białe, and more or less at the height of the next island, the Dąbrówka River flows out of it, which after about 1.5 km flows into Lake Gant. The lake, surrounded by high banks covered with pine forests, is one of the most charming places on the entire trail. The Gancka Struga flows out of its southern end, connecting with the Tejsówka River on the way to Babięta. For variety, you can turn off the route by choosing the right-hand tributary and paddling upstream to get to the mid-forest Lake Tejsowo.
A special attraction of this section are the two kayak portages. A little below the water station in Babięta, at the mill on the Babięcka Struga, and at the Lalka lock on the southeastern end of Lake Zyzdrój Wielki. The long and narrow trough of Zyzdrój also provides unforgettable impressions, and in the middle of it you can stop on the famous Island of Love. Several smaller islands add variety to the trip. After the lock, the current of the Zyzdrojowa Struga, meandering lazily among the reeds, will smoothly carry us to Lake Spychowskie with a water station on its left bank.
This stage is very varied, as it is made up of several elements characteristic of the entire trail: river sections – initially the Spychowska Struga, and at the end the actual Krutynia River, and a series of lakes connected by passages: Zdrużno, Uplik, Mokre, and Krutyńskie, each with a different character. Zdrużno, with its developed shoreline, has several secluded bays, Uplik is a mid-forest, narrow lake trough, its opposite is the 1.5 km wide and 8 km long basin of Lake Mokre, and Lake Krutyńskie initially resembles a wide and winding river, turning into a vast backwater. This beautiful section is characterized by unique views due to entering the areas of nature reserves. An indispensable element of this stage is the meal prepared by us and served to our guests in the Krutyńska Restaurant. During your stay at our campsite, you can also use the social facilities (including toilets, showers).
After enjoying the charms of the vast Lake Mokre, on the section from Krutyń to Ukta – which runs along the river for its entire length – we can usually float lazily with its current and enjoy the rivers and surrounding landscapes to a greater extent. This apparent monotony is broken by a kayak portage at the historic mill in Zielony Lasek, as well as the river meanders before Wojnowo, which require a slightly more active use of paddles. Before Wojnowo, you can enrich your journey with a trip to Lake Duś with the Old Believer Monastery, getting there through a narrow stream among the reeds, branching off from the right bank of the Krutynia.
Initially, this stage resembles the previous section, with the difference that below Krutynia the forest gave way first to shoreline alders and willows, and then to reed beds. Meanwhile, after passing Ukta, the river gradually flows back into higher parts of the forest occupying the area reaching the western bank of Lake Bełdany. As before, there are plenty of meanders here, especially before Nowy Most. Later, the Krutynia flows in a less winding channel, and before Iznota, the waterway is enriched by the forest lakes Gardyńskie and Malinówka, which are very reminiscent of Lake Krutyńskie in their formation, as well as fauna and flora.
This fragment of the river is also willingly chosen by beginner kayakers and groups looking for less demanding conditions. In contrast to the previous stage, shops and bars are actually only in Ukta and Nowy Most, i.e., at the beginning and end of the trip, so it is worth taking drinks and snacks with you. There are also not many places to camp along the way; after Nowa Ukta, the banks are mostly overgrown with vast reed beds. The exceptionally clear current of the Krutynia allows you to admire the richness of aquatic vegetation. For good swimmers, a river swim in Nowy Most can be recommended. The trip begins in Ukta at the “Kajaki Centrum” square. Participants and kayaks are transported there by our transport from the company’s headquarters in Krutyń. The end of the tour and the collection of participants takes place in Nowy Most, right behind the road bridge on the right bank. From there, people and equipment are transferred back to Krutyń.
We launch kayaks at the bridge in Spychowo. After a short river section, we will enter Lake Zdrużno. Sticking to the basic route of the waterway (and the right bank), we will leave it quite quickly by entering the passage connecting it with Lake Uplik. If you have a little time, it is worth paddling around some of its bays. On Lake Uplik, we will pass the Czaplisko – Ławny Lasek reserve with a pine stand over 200 years old. Equally magnificent specimens of pines will accompany us practically all the way to Krutyń. On Lake Mokre, at the height of the islands visible from the shore in Zgon, it is worth landing at the 400-year-old Karol Małłek Oak and walking to the second monumental tree – the Royal Pine. The end of the stage and the return of the kayaks is located about 600m after the bridge in Krutyń, on the left side on a plot with an exposed sign of our company. An additional distinguishing feature of this place is a thatched roof shelter erected right by the river.
This is the most popular and most frequented one-day trip during the season, due to the fact that its entire length is a river section, which is also characterized by a calm current, making it suitable for everyone – including less experienced water tourists and families with small children. The landscape is varied by the water mill in Zielony Lasek, which is characterized by its original and well-preserved architecture and where kayaks must be carried overland. Both here and at the bridge in Rososza, you can use catering facilities, so there is no need to take a large amount of provisions with you. People interested in the cultural heritage of Russian Old Believers can additionally arrange a trip to Lake Duś, connected to the Krutynia by a narrow stream flowing into it in Wojnowo. We start the trip from our clearing by the Krutynia River. The end of the stage and the return of the kayaks is in Ukta on the left bank behind the road bridge in the center of the village, on the square marked with the “Kajaki Centrum” sign.
Due to the restrictions related to launching kayaks at the outflow of the Krutynia from Lake Krutyńskie (a strict nature reserve), we have introduced a modified and more varied variant of the trip on the upper Krutynia to our offer. The classic, most picturesque fragment of the river between Lake Krutyńskie and the village of Krutyń is extended to the mill in Zielony Lasek, and earlier a crossing from Cierzpięty through the northern part of Lake Mokre. During one trip, we therefore get to know everything that makes the Krutynia Trail one of the most popular kayaking routes in Poland: the mighty lake trough of Mokre, the Lake Krutyńskie framed by the old-growth forest of the Piska Forest, and the upper bank of the Krutynia River – the undisputed pearl of the pristine landscape. The trip begins on a clearing by Lake Mokre, about 500 m to the edge of the village of Cierzpięty. Participants and kayaks are transported there by our transport from the company’s headquarters in Krutyń. The end of the tour and the collection of equipment is at the mill in Zielony Lasek, on the left bank of the river. From there, people and equipment are transferred back to Krutyń.
You can also take a walk to the monumental trees in the Królewska Sosna reserve from the town of Zgon, where a shorter variant of the trip through Lake Mokre to Krutyń begins. Due to the vastness of the basin and its shape, winds blowing from the north often raise a fairly high wave, so you can feel even more emotions closer to the middle of the lake. There are many places for sunbathing on the right bank, so you can enjoy even more rest. If you want to stay in the kayak, it is worth paying attention to the trees majestically climbing towards the sky, which you can see on the right bank. Close contact with the pristine nature is also guaranteed by Lake Krutyńskie and the “crystal clear” Krutynia River flowing out of it. To the village of Krutyń, it is characterized by a fairly strong drop, as well as rich vegetation and numerous water birds. The trip is diversified by fallen trunks and branches of alders, birches, and ancient pines and oaks arching over the river. We launch kayaks in Zgon on the bank, next to the main national road, directly at the PTTK station. The end of the tour and the transfer of water equipment then takes place in Krutyń, in the place given in the description of the Spychowo – Krutyń route.
This is a longer and slightly more demanding, but also varied, variant of the trip from Ukta, popularly called the “Masurian Amazon”. In addition to the river section, it also includes a fragment of the Krutynia trail leading through the Gardyńskie and Malinówka lakes. The first of these is quite shallow, but rich in various vegetation and water birds. The connected Malinówka, in turn, resembles Lake Krutyńskie – the main, larger and more extensive basin is connected by an arm resembling a wide and winding river. As on the upper Krutynia, this section is protected by a reserve (Krutynia Dolna) over a long distance. Although the route runs through swampy areas and lakes, it is considered beautiful and safe. The trip begins in Ukta at the “Kajaki Centrum” square. Participants and kayaks are transported there by our transport from the company’s headquarters in Krutyń. The end of the tour and collection is in Iznota before the road bridge on the right bank. From there, people and equipment are transferred back to Krutyń.
